Empty credits
It’s kind of sad when you have your first day of a new unit of a new system, because essentially you realize that the whole semester’s worth of a physiology course was basically worth 4 hrs of med school lectures.

Bad Juxtaposition
Had anatomy lab today where we did some investigations of the ribs and lungs, it was a pretty in depth session with cracking open the sternum and all that jazz.
Afterwards I was just browsing facebook and my friend was posting up pictures of what she was cooking lately. Just ribs, all juicy, and covered in sauce.
And I used to like ribs too…
Ugh

John, not Jon
In epidemiology we learned some historical tidbits to add interest to the course. One bit was on the epidemiologist Dr. John Snow. Me, being the attentive and on the ball med student like I am, thought the lecturer was trying to make a Game of Thrones reference.

Lots of coffee though
The toughest part of the day during a surgical symposium is that because the speakers are typically used to not eating lunch or taking breaks, none of the attendees get lunch on time either.
So hungry.

The future is now
Listening to a “the future of medicine” talk, specifically technology and medicine. Regarding surgical robots, the speaker looks out to all of us preclerks and says, “you know, if they didn’t cost so much I’d much rather prefer the robotic console instead. You students get tired, cranky, and the robot never talks back.”
Yikes.
Then he goes to talk about...

Some med school version of Murphy's Law
Spend 12 hrs memorizing drug mechanisms of antiarrhythmics, no questions on exam. Disregard 1 lecture on congenital heart defects, there go like 6 marks I’ll never see again.
….Sigh

Talk about good timing
I love how fuckyeahmedicalstuff wrote a few articles on heart disease the night before my exam.
I love how I can also understand it…looks like this ‘studying’ thing is paying off :P

Personal boundaries
Practising for clinical skill methodology exams are a great way to find an excuse to just feel your fellow classmates up.

Timmy ho!
As any Canadian would know, Tim Hortons’ recently changed their cup sizes.
Tim Hortons’ you ask? Franchised coffee/baked goods shop that’s as Canadian as maple syrup and hockey…but I digress.
Now in light of this change, I decided to make a quick infographic on how to decipher the sizes if you’re a Canadian school student.
Oh man, Roll up the Rim is soon...

No dessert.
I just caught myself snacking on some chips while studying the risk factors of heart disease…..fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

I thought this behavior would be gone by med...
This is so true. Again, found from Reddit.
Especially in small groups…

It was done for science...
Drank too much coffee last night studying cardiology. Ended up giving myself some palpitations. At least I know what an escape beat feels like.

Like the Italian Job
Learning about the Sicilian Gambit antiarrhythmic drug classification system.
Doesn’t it sound like the name of a gangster/mafia based movie?

Makes for awkward dinner talk
So because it’s Valentine’s day, we have a “for fun” talk about love in medical school. Two of the panelists are a married physician couple. She works in the ICU, while he’s an ER doc….
For those needing more explanation…guess where the Intensive Care Unit get a lot of their patients from…
Really redefines the question, “what did you do...

To be fair, he does beat me at the game
My buddy who’s in the same small group as me sometimes mixes up his words.
To hilarious responses.
Case in point, for one whole session he couldn’t pronounce myocardial infarction. He called it MarioKartal Infarction.

Adhering to tradition
In cardiac small group today the preceptor was talking about branching patients diagnostically into warm, cold, wet, dry (2x2) classifications. He then dropped any further follow on this subject. All I could think about in this reference was the greek humors in ancient greek medicine. Still not sure what he’s going on here.

Lights, camera, and action
Spent 3 hrs today filming 3 minutes worth of admissions video footage. We have an exam next week.
Priorities…am I right?

Worth it?

A fair summary of it right?
Posted on our med class fb group. Thought I share, probably already on reddit.
Whelp that distracted me from Epidemiology for a good 5 minutes.

Spot on
Seminar on Depression today.
Here’s the list of its mental features we’re told to know:
Depression can present with
-poor memory
-poor concentration
-indecisiveness
-poor motivation (procrastination)
Sounds like a case of being a medical student to me.

At least he taught me how to save 15% on car...
Today we had a talk about accounting and financial management for physicians.
90min later, all I could think about was that an appropriate title for the presentation could be “Loops and the holes that come with them”.
Also, apparently if you want to incorporate yourself, you can’t name your professional corporation any old name. That kind of ruins the fun out of it.
I was...
amazon-glamour asked: What compelled you to be a doctor? Any external forces influence your decision, do you feel like there's honour to uphold (LOL too much tv watching :P).
Anonymous asked: Can I be your friend non (pre-med) looking for some funnn?
Anonymous asked: Do you know where i could find the auscultation playlist that your friend did ? Because i find the pericardial murmur hard to point out...

He got the Ken doll treatment
Yesterday we were doing some lab work using the patient simulator Harvey (see here: http://www.laerdal.com/ca/doc/172/Harvey-The-Cardiopulmonary-Patient-Simulator) to hear heart sounds and practise understanding murmur sounds. Harvey’s pretty cool and quite good for this. He’s supposed to be able to model real life patients almost exactly.
In fact one of the girls thought Harvey was...

I'd rather not know
First time I went to a med school Superbowl party. You’d think that as health practitioners, especially after all the ‘learning’ we’ve been doing lately on coronary artery disease we’d have some healthier options for food.
Nope.
And I totally ate it all too…

Addressing the elephant in room
Talk from a urologist today in our seminar session. First words he says, “urology: it’s not all just penises”.
*commence giggles*
Unfortunately he didn’t really address what it WAS about, besides penises, and just talked about the long days, the hardest parts of his jobs, and what brings a smile to his face.

Just don't take E while listening to it
One of my classmates made a ‘play list’ of all the heart sounds and a bunch of murmurs. Another classmate then remixed it to some electronic. We call it “Lub Dub step”.

Probably good for my overall health though
So fun fact for the day, apparently using the bone saw on cadavers makes it smell like doritos. Goodbye forever, doritos.
